Permanent Hair Removal
Though shaving, waxing, and plucking hair may result in short lived removal of unwanted hair, there is potential for permanent hair removal with laser technology. The key is to damage the root of the hair follicle in order to stunt further growth. Advanced laser treatments are able to do this by pulsing laser light onto the skin, where it is absorbed and turned into heat by dark pigment in the hair follicle. The resulting heat has the potential to debilitate the hair root, causing permanent hair removal.
That being said, there are certain factors that increase the chances for permanent hair removal via laser treatment. Since the hair must be in the root for the laser to affect it, patients shouldn’t wax or pluck for at least two weeks prior to treatment. The darker and thicker the hair being treated is, the more effective the laser treatment. Also, hairs that can be affected by laser energy must be in the active growing phase. Dormant, shedding hairs are randomly distributed throughout the skin at any given time, so multiple sessions are often required to increase chances for permanent hair removal.
